Birthday Party: The Missing Piece Meets the Big O/

Our wonderful helper made last minute cupcakes for the kids. Mila remembered the cupcakes two years later and would request them again. Loving how connected everyone is.

For Nina’s fourth birthday party, we picked out a book called “The Missing Piece Meets the Big O” It’s a book with simple lines and a great pick-me-up storyline. The Missing piece is a little triangle looking for a place to “belong” to.  One day, it meets the “Big O” and it learns that you can stand on your own and carry on.  At the end of the book, The Big O and The Missing Piece become friends.

Actually, it’s Marc and I that love this book.  It’s one of those books adults can read and enjoy and remember that we can all pick ourselves and go for it. Wherever the path leads, nothing will come of it unless we take charge.

So there was the book, the activity? We wanted to have the kids make the sequel to the story: The adventures of The Missing Piece and the Big O.

We started, as usual, by having Marc read the book to the kids. We always try to make sure that daddy has a role to play in the Kids’ parties other than as a cameraman.  Then we handed each child a basic cut out of the “Big O” and the “Missing Piece” and a blank piece of paper.  I had a whole bunch of magazine cut outs of various things in a big box.  Houses, planes, cars, trees, beach, sky, whatever.  Then we asked all the kids to come up with a story about where the two friends went after the book ended.

Each kid took a glue stick, picked out the pictures they liked out of the box and pasted the two pieces with the magazine cut outs.  Some went to Japan, others went to watch the ballet, and others hung out on a boat. Marc and myself sat with each child and asked them to tell the story of each page they made and we wrote them down in a notebook.

Now comes the hard part.  I pasted all the pages together, and typed out each kid’s story so that it matched their page and made a full book.  Finally, I added a cover calling the book, “The Missing Piece and the Big O, Together.” I was supposed to go and share the book with the class, but it took me a while to complete the book that I totally forgot about it.  This is a treasure book for Nina though, and I think one of the best take away from kids’ parties.

最後に「The Missing Piece and the Big O Together」の表紙をつけて、世界で一冊の続編の出来上がり!

The Book, the cover, and the various stickers and cutouts ready to go!

Marc reading to the kids. Everybody is super focused as they listened to the story.

Nina and her class getting to work. Where are you taking them to Nina?

Even Mila had a chance to make her own page. She’s clearly taking the Missing Piece and the Big O to her favorite eateries!

Now comes the hard part of putting the books together.

Typing out all the kids’ stories and cutting them out to fit the pages.

Adding the last touches to the book.
